Alice In Wonderland and ambiguity

                                           Fiona Baner "Arsewoman In Wonderland

"Wonder" Anna Gaskell photograph

I went to see Alice In Wonderland at The Tate in Liverpool and it brought to my attention something I was aware of but not focusing on was the ambiguity and creepiness of looking at alice as this childlike figure that somehow has untold sexual connotations.
Not knowing wether to be shocked, those controversial pieces have a certain appeal that worries as we look. Are we being voyeuristic? The female figure is automatically objectified.

List of books and sites useful for essay/research

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Alice in Wonderland and Philosophy: Curiouser and Curiouser by William Irvin

The Alice Behind Wonderland by Simon Winchester
Surrealism by Fiona Bradley
A Child's Work: The Importance of Fantasy Play by Vivian Gussin Paley
The Ambiguity of Play by Brian Sutton-Smith

work inspiration/characters

Character : sense the word was
used in the 18thc to describe
an actor representing a ‘part’
or the character of another
person.
An ‘effective impersonation’ of
someone else.

I did those based on J.Otto Seibold characters as a hommage, a pixie and troll characters.
And this one it's just some of my own character work, I'd like to develop some of my skills in that area in the future.

J Otto Seibold

This is one of my favourite illustrator and this version of Alice in Wonderland in pop up is one of the best I have ever seen. I do enjoy going through children's book and sometimes I spent time in bookshops looking at them, what I like about this one is that it is geared more towards adults but still remains fun, it's like one of your best childhood memory.
Again I really have an interest for work that has been finished digitally, this one retains a quality of characters and drawing style despite it.

Book The Three Incestuous Sisters

I got this book from Audrey Niffeneger, the text in the story is really brief, the images really translate the dark and strange feeling of the book and carry more of the narrative than the actual words, it's more like the text accompanies the pictures rather than the other way around a bit like a children book but for adult.

Playfulness Bjork

When I was younger I was a big fan of Bjork, she would take me to this magical world where you can play and forget about everything else. This video reminds me of that era and that still to this day the child in me hasn't quite gone away.

sometimes I write

NO MORE NO FALLS

In your Name, there I wait and ache
and as the dawn approach,
I feel as If I have lost my Wings

Tumbling out, trembling is the Sky

Oh yes, I sink in Fear!

A sense of bare breathlessness

In your Name, there I stand and pray
for a diffusion, Oblivion
I shake as if I had bled my Heart

Burning out, dancing as the Flames

Oh helpless as I fell!

A coffin breaks in emptiness

It happened once,
as the whole of me stumbled
I loved you all
No more no falls

YELLOW SHADES OF PAIN

The sky's telling a story
To the drops falling out out of its claws

About a girl who lives next door
Whereby the upstairs cradle

Where the sky ought to see

It is crying out of the clouds
Clear tears are pouring down

Over the weight of her Fear

There she was looking blue
As the breeze of an angel flew

The sky's mouth opened wide
Spitting out a blitz of stars

But there she was knocking on, head to the wall
She wept that she'd fallen in love

So I opened the door and drawn myself into the cold
wrapped myself into tears of rain
the sky and I cried, oh! yellow shades of pain!

Universal spaces and I, we will part
And at the dawn of tomorrow

It will be just fine...

I like to play with the sounds of words to express myself as well as drawing, I sort of think you can draw with words as well.

space oddity book project

Canadian illustrator Andrew Kolb made a picture book of David Bowie's Space oddity.
I especially like the playful aspect of vector illustrations, the roundness and clear clean cut colours takes it a bit closer to being an image book for adults rather than children.
Also a great idea to link up an interest to music with the artwork, I might like to try something similar in my own work in the future.

Yuck performance review

I saw Yuck on Tuesday they were fantastic, they are one of the best new bands in my opinion, the singer where quite charismatic and I'm even thinking of something as big as previously underrated others such as The Smiths in terms of actual talent quality, it's very rare these days to find something that good especially when you're a bit older and have been around a while. However they do hold a lot to Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine but in fairness they do have their own originality and great lyrics.

Edward Bawden

Whilst on my drawing project, I found out about Edward Bawden, he inspired me in my some of my final pieces for my drawing assignment.
Some incredibles patterns, lines and colour blocking, these are done using lino prints.
There is a sense of looking from different viewpoints and angles, it gives the sense of space and depth throughout the work.
